Question

Çonsider the following equations:

2Fe2++H2O2xA+yB (in basic medium)

2MnO4-+6H++5H2O2x'C+y'D+z'E (in acidic medium)

The sum of the stoichiometric coefficients x,y,x',y' and z'for products A,B,C,D and E, respectively, is _____________.

Solution

To determine the sum of stoichiometric coefficients, we have to determine the values of stoichiometric coefficients and for this, we have to frame the chemical equations given:

For First reaction:

Step 1: The first equation: Fe2+Fe3++e-×2_____1 H2O2+2H++2e-2H2O_______2

Step 2: On adding equations 1 and 2. we get: 2Fe2++H2O2+2H++2e-2Fe3++2H2O+2e-

Step 3: Hence, it can be observed from the equation that: x=2 and y=2.

For second reaction:

Step 1: Similarly, the second equation is: 8H++MnO4-+5e-Mn2++4H2O×2______3 H2O2O2+2H++2e-×5______4

Step 2: On adding equations 3 and 4 we get: 2MnO4-+5H2O2+16H++10e-2Mn2++8H2O+5O2+10H++10e-

Step 3: Hence it can be observed from the equation that: x'=2,y'=8 and z'=5.

Step 4: The sum of stoichiometric coefficients =2+2+2+8+5=19.

Therefore the sum of stoichiometric coefficients is 19.
