(I) Heating impure metal with CO and distilling the resulting volatile carbonyl (b.p. 430C) and finally decomposition at 1500-2000C to get the pure metal.

(i) Impure nickel is heated with CO to obtain volatile [Ni(CO)4]. The volatile carbonate is distilled and decomposed at 1500to 2000C to obtain pure metal.
