Question

Consider the following silicates ,
(a) BaTi(Si3O9)
(b) ZnCa2Si2O7.
Then calculate X÷Y where X and Y are total number of monovalent and divalent oxygen atoms in both silicates respectively.

Open in App
Solution

(a) For BaTi(Si3O9), the number of monovalent oxygen atoms (X) is 6 and the number of divalent O atoms (Y) is 3.
(b) For ZnCa2Si2O7 the number of monovalent oxygen atoms (X) is 6 and the number of divalent O atoms (Y) is 1.
Hence, total X=6+6=12 and total Y=3+1=4
Thus, XY=124=3
