In presence of magnetic field and electric field, the degeneracy between the orbitals gets broken.
Therefore splitting of spectral lines takes place. This is known as the Stark effect and Zeeman effect.
Also, degenerate orbitals are those orbitals which have the same energy.
For an atom,
degenerate orbitals have same l value but different m value i.e. they differ in orientation.
