On recommendations of the National Commission on Agriculture, Agriculture Census in India is conducted quinquennially (every 5 years).

The reference period in Agriculture Census is the agriculture year i.e. from July to June. So far, nine Agriculture Censuses since 1970-71 have been conducted in the country.
