Question

Consider the following statements:
1. Stress path is a locus of stress points developed by stress changes in the soil and can be obtained from Mohr's Stress Circle.

3. Stress path has a value in giving insight into probable soil response-particularly if a part of the previous history stress path can be reproduced.

Solution

The correct option is D Only 1 and 3
The successive states of stress in a test specimen or an in-situ element of soil can be represented by a series of Mohr's circles or in a less confusing way, by series v: stress points (p, q).
p=σ1+σ32 and q=σ1σ32
The curve or straight line connecting the relevant stress points is called the stress path, giving a clear representation of states of stress. The horizontal distance between effective and total stress path is the value of pore pressure at any particular state. In general the horizontal distance between the two stress paths is the sum of the pore water pressure due to change in total stress and the static pore water pressure.
