Westergaard assumed an elastic soil to be laterally reinforced by numerous closely spaced, horizontal sheets of negligible thickness but of infinite rigidity that allow only vertical movement but prevent the mass as a whole from undergoing any lateral strain. Newmark has constructed a circular influence chart to compute the vertical stress at any point at a depth (z) under a circular footing, carrying a uniform load of intensity q. This chart incidentally can be used not only for circular areas but for all other types of footings like square, rectangular or any other shape.
