On the basis of his experiment with pea plants, Mendel gave three laws namely, law of dominance, law of segregation and law of independent assortment. These laws are also called as Mendelian principles. Gametes are produced during meiosis. During meiosis, crossing over of chromosomes results in recombination and the exchange of genetic material between the maternal and paternal chromosomes. It occurs for normal segregation of chromosomes in the progeny level. Sex determining chromosomes are known as sex chromosomes. X-Y mechanism of sex determination is seen in human beings. In this, there are two sex chromosomes, X and Y. Females have XX and males have XY chromosomes.
