The highly polished monolithic Ashokan Pillars were carved out of single pieces of a buff - coloured sandstone.
These are surmounted by an abacus and a crowning ornament of majestic animals (four lions, set back to back, at Sarnath). The lion is said to be a symbol of royalty and leadership and may also represent the Buddhist king Ashoka who ordered these columns.
