The history of Mauryan empire is reconstructed on the basis of Ashokan inscriptions. The pillars were erected to spread the message of the king Ashoka to his people and not as a symbol of victory over Kalinga.
The pillars have inscriptions written in Brahmi Script.
Pillar edicts have been found at Lauriya-Araraj, Lauriya Nandangarh, Rampurva, Nigali Sagar, Sarnath, Meerut and Topra.

The pillars are not clustered but single pillars were erected in different places. Pillars erected by Persian king Darius were found clustered in various locations."
