River systems older than the landform through which they flow are called antecedent rivers and the one formed after the formation of the landform of their passage called consequent rivers. Most of the Himalayan rivers like Indus, Sutlej and Bhramaputra are in existence even before the folding of Himalayn ranges. But in the case of the Peninsular rivers which originates in the Western Ghats are younger in comparison to the landmass through which they flow.

Many of the Himalayan rivers are in youth stages and a powerful vertical erosion is dominant in the system. In case of the Peninsular rivers have attained maturity and lateral erosion is at dominance.

लैंडफॉर्म जिसके माध्यम से नदियाँ बहती हैं ,से पुरानी नदी प्रणाली को पूर्ववर्ती नदियाँ कहा जाता है और जिनका निर्माण लैंडफॉर्म के निर्माण के बाद हुआ है,उसे अनुवर्ती नदियाँ कहा जाता है। सिंधु, सतलज और ब्रह्मपुत्र जैसी अधिकांश हिमालयी नदियाँ हिमालय पर्वतमाला के पहले से ही अस्तित्व में हैं।लेकिन प्रायद्वीपीय नदियों के मामले में जो पश्चिमी घाट से निकलती हैं वे लैंडफॉर्म जिसके माध्यम से वे बहती हैं की तुलना में नवीन हैं।

हिमालय की कई नदियाँ युवा अवस्था में हैं।प्रायद्वीपीय नदियों के मामले में प्रौढ़ता आई है और इनमें पार्श्व अपरदन प्रमुख हैं।
