India receives more than 75% of its rainfall during the south-west monsoon season. It is also called as summer monsoon sets in over the extreme southwestern tip of the peninsula by the end of May. The onset of Monsoon is characterized by a sudden spurt of rainfall activity. It progresses inland in stages and covers the entire country by the middle of July. Kerala is the first state to receive the south west monsoon rainfall.

Tamilnadu, Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan remain dry during the summer monsoon. Tamilnadu receives its rainfall during the winter season in the form of Northeast monsoon.

भारत दक्षिण-पश्चिम मानसून के मौसम में 75% से अधिक वर्षा प्राप्त करता है। इसे ग्रीष्मकालीन मानसून भी कहा जाता है,जो मई के अंत तक प्रायद्वीप के चरम दक्षिण-पश्चिमी छोर पर स्थित होता है। अचानक वर्षा की बौछार मॉनसून की शुरुआत की विशेषता होती है। यह चरणों में आगे बढ़ता है और जुलाई के मध्य तक पूरे देश को आच्छादित करता है। केरल दक्षिण-पश्चिम मानसून से वर्षा प्राप्त करने वाला पहला राज्य है।
