The peninsular rivers have relatively smaller basin area when compared to the himalyan rivers. They are seasonal and depend on the monsoon for their water flow. Most of the rivers rise on the western ghats which acts as a water divide between the westward and eastward flowing rivers. Few rivers like Betwa, Ken and Chambal originates in the northern peninsular region, but flows northward to join the Ganga river systems.

The eastward flowing rivers forms extensive delta on the east coastal region. Unlike eastward flowing rivers, the west flowing rivers does not form any delta. The main reason is the steep slope and short course along the slopes of the western ghats.
