Red sanders are endemic to the south eastern ghats region in India. These trees are valued for their rich red color and mainly used as timber. Unlike sandalwood, the red sanders are not aromatic. They are also used in traditional Chinese medicine preparations.

These trees are illegally smuggled for their value as timber and medicine. Due to effective conservation efforts of forest departments the incidents of smuggling has been brought down. As a result, the IUCN has reclassified from the earlier endangered status to near threatened status.
