Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi are obligate symbionts with most terrestrial plants. They improve plant nutrition, particularly phosphate acquisition. In exchange, the fungi obtain photosynthetically fixed carbon. Flooded rice reduced the survival of infected propagules of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. The flooded rice soils were used to grow upland crops, high colonization levels could be obtained, especially on soybean. Vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae may be able to increase crop yields while reducing fertilizer and energy inputs.
