Bamboo, a minor forest produce, belongs to grass family but grows like a tree. They are woody and may attain a height of as much as 30 metres. It is called the poor man's timber as it provides cheap material for construction, basketry and a host of other things. It occurs in tropical moist and dry forests in north-east India, Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Odisha, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Of the total bamboo consumed in India, 32% is for construction, 30% for rural use, 17% for pulp making, 7% for packing and remaining 14% for other purposes.
