The enzyme required for copying genetic information from one strand of DNA into RNA (transcription) is DNA dependent RNA polymerase.

In eukaryotes, there are at least three RNA polymerases.

RNA polymerase I transcribes rRNA (28S, 18S and 5.8S).

RNA polymerase II is responsible for the transcription of the precursor of mRNA, the heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA).
