Solution

The correct option is B 2
A food chain is the sequential transfer of matter and energy in the form of food from organism to organism.

Tigers are one of the main predators (carnivores) in the forest ecosystem, they maintain the food web and control the population of herbivores.

Removal of carnivores like tigers might lead to the rapid increase in the population of herbivores and this would eventually reduce the vegetation cover due to overgrazing.

Hence, statement 1 is incorrect but statement 2 is correct.

Energy is transferred between various trophic levels when one organism eats another and obtains the energy-rich molecules.

As per 10 percent law, only 10 percent of energy is transferred from one trophic level to the next. This is because, at each trophic level, energy is lost in the form of heat as organisms carry out cellular respiration. Also, certain organic molecules cannot be digested by the organisms and hence are eliminated by the body rather than being used.

As the energy transferred from one trophic level to the next is not very high, there is too little energy to support a population at a higher trophic level.

Therefore, the number of trophic levels is generally limited to 3 – 4 trophic levels.

Hence, statement 3 is correct but statement 4 is incorrect.

Out of the four statements given, two are incorrect.
