Solution

The correct option is C

3 and 4 only

Indigo revolt took place in Bengal. Here peasants defended themselves. Both 1 and 2 statements are incorrect. 3rd and 4th statements are correct.

1. Indigo Revolt: (In Bengal) - 1859-60 (against European Indigo planters) started by Digambar Biswas and Bihsnu Bisswas. The Indigo revolt (or Nilbidroha) was a peasant movement and subsequent uprising of indigo farmers against the indigo planters. The privileges and immunities enjoyed by the British planters placed them above the law and beyond all judicial control.

The methods adopted were:

1. Refused to take advances and enter into contract.

2. Pledged not to sow Indigo

3. Defended themselves with whatever weapon they had.

4. Physically resisted attempts to evict them.

5. Collected funds to fight court cases.

6. Also used weapons of social Boycott to force planter’s servants to leave him.

Result: Government issued a notification that the Indian farmers cannot be compelled to grow indigo and that it would ensure that all disputes were settled by legal means. By the end of 1860, Indigo planters should down their factories and cultivation of indigo was virtually wiped out from Bengal.
