Question

Consider the plane S formed by the dipole axis and the axis of earth. Let P be point on the magnetic equator and in S. Let Q be the point of intersection of the geographical and magnetic equators. Obtain the declination and dip angles at P and Q.

Solution

Point P: Point P is in plane S formed by dipole axis and the axis of the earth hence declination is ZERO. Also since point P is on magnetic equator, therefore angle od dip will also be zero.

Point Q: Q lies in the magnetic equator; angle of dip is zero, but the angle of declination is 11.3 degrees.

Final Answer:

At point P dip angle and declination both are zero.

At point Q declination is dip angle is zero, but declination is 11.3 degree.
