Assume that the biasing details are left out and the transistors are working in active region with T1 having transconductance gm1 and input base-emitter small signal resistance rπ1 and for transistor T2 the transconductance gm2 and input small signal base-emitter resistance rπ2. Then the voltage gain |Av| is given as

The small signal equivalent of the above circuit can be given as



From the above circuit it is clear that,
Vout=gm1rπ2vπ1
thus, Vin=vπ1
thus, Vout=gm1rπ2vin
Voltage gain |Av|=V0Vin=gm1rπ2
now, gmrπ=β
Thus, rπ2=β2gm2
|Av|=β2(gm1gm2)
