Question

Consider three converging lenses L1,L2 and L3 having identical geometrical construction. The refractive indices of L1 and L2 are μ1 and μ2 respectively. The upper half of the lens L3 has refractive index μ1 and the lower half has μ2 as shown in the figure. A point object O has an image at O1 by the lens L1 and at O2 by the lens L2 placed in the same position. If L3 is placed at the same place:

Solution

The correct option is D (a) and (b) are correct
Since, due to lens L1, image is formed at O1, hence due to upper part of L3, image will be formed at O1.

And, due to lens L2, image is formed at O2, hence due to lower part of L3, image will be formed at O2.

Hence, image will be formed at both O1 and O2.

Answer-(D).
