Question

Consider two covalent compounds ALn1 and BLn2 . If central atom (A) of first compound has total of six valence electron pairs and central atom (B) of second compound contains total of five valence electron pairs and both compounds are planar and non-polar then calculate value of expression (n1n2)2.
[where n1 and n2 are number of monovalent surrounding atom (L)]

Solution

in ALn1:
Number of valence electron pairs on A=6
Given, it is non-polar and planar
Thus possible shape is sqare planar
Hence, n1=4
In BLn2:
Number of valence electron pairs on B=5
Given, it is non-polar and planar
Thus possible shape is linear
Hence, n2=2
(n1n2)2=(42)2=4
