Question

Consider two plane convex lens of same radius of curvature and refractive index n1 and n2 respectively. Now consider two cases:

Case – I: When n1=n2=n, then equivalent focal length of lens is f0.

Case – II: When n1=n, n2=n+n, then equivalent focal length of lens is f=f0+f0 . The correct options are:

  1. If nn>0, then f0f0<0

  2. f0f0<nn

  3. If n=1.5,n=10-3 and f0=20cm then f0=0.02cm

  4. If nn<0, then f0f0>0

Solution

The correct option is C

If n=1.5,n=10-3 and f0=20cm then f0=0.02cm

Step 1. Given Data:

Refractive index of two plane convex lens of same radius of curvature are n1 and n2, respectively

Step 2. The focal length of lens:

For a lens of refractive index, n and radius of curvature, R1andR2, then the focal length, f

1f=n-11R1-1R2

Step 3. Solve for Case 1:

Now considering the first case, n1=n2=nand focal length, f0

1f0=n-11R-1R

1f0=2n-1R [eq1]

Step 4. Solve for Case 2:

Now, considering the second case, n1=n,n2=n+n,f=f0+f0

1f0+f0=n-1R+n+n-1R

1f0+f0=2n+n-2R eq2

Step 5. Find the focal length:

Dividing both the equations, we get

1f01f0+f0=2n-1R2n+n-2R

1+f0f0=2n-22n+n-2

f0f0=-n2n+n-2 [eq3]

f020=-10-32×1.5+10-3-2 [As given in option n=1.5,n=10-3,f0=20cm]

f0=-0.02cm

f0=0.02cm

From, eq3

If nn>0, then f0f0<0

Hence, the correct option is A&C.
