Question

Consider two uniform discs of the same thickness and different radii R1=R and R2=αR, made of the same material. If the ratio of their moments of inertia I1 and I2, respectively, about their axes is I1:I2=1:16, then the value of α is :

Solution

The correct option is C 2
Let ρ be the density of the discs and t is their thickness.

Moment of inertia of the disc is given by,
I=MR22=[ρ(πR2)t]R22=ρπtR42

IR4 ρ and t are same for the discs

I2I1=(R2R1)4=α4=161

α=2

Hence, (C) is the correct answer.
