Question

Question 07
Considering the formation, breaking and strength of hydrogen bond, predict which of the following mixtures will show a positive deviation from Raoult's law?
(a) Methanol and acetone (b) Chloroform and acetone
(c) Nitric acid and water (d) Phenol and aniline

Solution

(a) In pure methanol, molecules are hydrogen bonded. On adding acetone, its molecules get in between the host molecules and break some of the hydrogen bonds between them.
Therefore, the intermolecular altractive forces between the solute-solvent molecules are weaker than those between the solute-solute and solvent-solvent molecules.
On the other hand, other three remaining options will show negative deviation from Raout's law where the intermolecular altractive forces between the solute-solvent molecules are stronger than those between the solute-solute and solvent-solvent molecules.
