Question

Constant head permeability tests were performed on two soil specimens, S1 and S2. The ratio of height of the two (LS1:LS2) is 1.5, the ratio of the diameter of specimens (DS1:DS2) is 0.5, and the ratio of the constant head (hS1:hS2) applied on the specimens is 2.0. If the discharge from both the specimens is equal, the ratio of the permeability of the soil specimens (kS1:kS2) is
  1. 3

Solution

The correct option is A 3
For constant head permeability test,

k=QLah
Q discharge
L length of specimen
a area of cross-section of specimen
h constant head

Given,

Ls1Ls2=32

Ds1Ds2=0.5

as1as2=(Ds1Ds2)2=(0.5)2

hs1hs2=2

Qs1=Qs2

Ks1Ks2=(Qs1Ls1as1hs1)(Qs2Ls2as2hs2)

=Qs1Qs2×Ls1Ls2×hs2hs1×as2as1

=1×32×12×1(0.5)2

=322×22=3
