(1) Draw square STUV whose sides are 3.5 cm.
(2) Draw rectangle ABCD such that CD = 4.8 cm and BC = 2.8 cm.

Solution

(1) Steps of construction of the required square are as follows:
(1) Draw a line segment ST = 3.5 cm
(2) At S, draw ∠XST = 90° and at T, draw ∠YTS = 90° (since each angle in a square is of 90°)
(3) Taking S as centre, draw an arc of radius 3.5 cm that intersects XS at V.
(4) Taking T as centre, draw an arc of radius 3.5 cm that intersects YT at U.
(5) Join V and U.
The required square STUV is thus drawn.

(2) Steps of construction of the given rectangle are as follows:
(1) Draw a line segment CD = 4.8 cm.
(2) At D, draw ∠YDC = 90° and at C, draw ∠XCD = 90° (since each angle in a rectangle is of 90°)
(3) Taking D as centre, draw an arc of radius 2.8 cm that intersects YD at A.
(4) Taking C as centre, draw an arc of radius 2.8 cm that intersects XC at B.
(5) Join A and B.
The required rectangle ABCD is thus drawn.
