Punjab consumes the highest amount of chemical fertilisers in India. Consumption of chemical fertilisers has been increasing in the country along with increase in agricultural production. Use of fertilisers increased to 25.6 million tonnes in 2014-15 from 1 million tonne in the 1960 s. In the fiscal year 2019, the nitrogenous fertiliser consumption in India amounted to over 17 million metric tons. The country consumed a large share of nitrogenous fertilisers over the years, while potash fertiliser accounted for a small share between fiscal years 2012 and 2019.
