On dividing $5$ by $4$ we get the remainder $1$. Since, $1$ is less than $4$,it cannot be divided by $4$.

$\therefore$ We put decimal point in the quotient after $1$ and in the dividend after $5$. We can put as many zeroes as required in the dividend after the decimal. Bringing down $0$ from the dividend to the right of $1$ , we get $10$ as the new dividend. Dividing $10$ by $4$, we get $2$ in the quotient and $2$ as remainder. Again dividing the new dividend $20$ by $4$, we get $5$in the quotient and $0$ as remainder.

Therefore, $1\frac{1}{4}=1.25$.
