Question

‘Covalent bond is directional, whereas ionic bond is not.’ Justify.

Open in App
Solution

1.Covalent bond is formed by the sharing of electrons between two non metal atoms whereas ionic bond is formed by the transfer of electrons from an electropositive atom to an electronegative atom.

2.In covalent bond, the sharing of electrons is done by overlapping of atomic orbitals which are directional except s-orbital and are held by weak attractive forces.Hence, covalent bond is said to be directional.

3.In ionic bond, the electrostatic forces of attraction between cation and anion are aligned in all directions, hence ionic bond is non-directional.

4.Covalent molecules exhibit isomerism due to directional nature and ionic molecules do not exhibit isomerism as they are non-directional in nature.
