Question

Critical temperature is the temperature above which substances can't be liquefied so how easily liquifible gases have high critical temperature

Open in App
Solution

1. Gases can be liquefied by applying pressure at suitable temperature.

2. But, as the temperature increases, there is an increase in kinetic energy of the molecules of gas. This makes the process of liquefication of gas very difficult. So, critical temperature is the temperature above which, gas cannot be liquefied.

3. Easily liquefiable gases have high critical temperature because, there is more forces of attraction among the molecules, which require a large temperature to go apart and lose contact, thus, they have high critical temperature.
