Dear Student,

a. The Vietnam war was started in 1954 but escalated in 1960's with the involvement of USA which continued till 1974-75.
a. Vietnam even after Independence took almost three decades to form Republic of Vietnam.
b. The French tried to regain control by using the emperor, Bao Dai, they were however defeated after 8 years of battle in 1954. At the peace negotiations, Vietnamese were persuaded to accept the division of the country with Ho Chi Minh taking control of the communist bloc in the North and Bao Dai taking control of South. This division , proved to be disastrous for the Vietnam, as it resulted into political turmoil bringing about conflict in the region , leading to loss of life and property.

The Bao Dai regime was soon overthrown by a coup led by Ngo Dinh Diem.Diem built a repressive and authoritarian government and did not tolerate any opposition.
d. Diem retained a French law that permitted Christianity but outlawed Buddhism.
e. National Liberation Front (NLF) with the support of Ho chi Minh fought for the unification of country

Vietnam also got entangled in Cold war politics The US got involved in the war in Vietnam because it feared that a communist government would come to power in Vietnam after the National Liberation Front formed a coalition with the Ho Chi Minh government in the north, against Ngo Dinh Diems regime.
US policy-planners feared a spread of communism to other countries in the area, that is it would have a domino effect
g. Finally ,in January 1974 a peace settlement was entered into with the US in Paris which ended the war.
h. On 30th April 1975, The NLF occupied the presidential palace in Saigon to end the conflict between the NLF and the Saigon regime , which ultimately led to the unification of Vietnam.
