Question

CsCl has cubic structure. Suppose its density is 4.37 g/cm3. What is the distance between Cs+ and Cl ions?
(Atomic mass of Cs is 133). pm

Solution

For CsCl, Zeff=1
because total number of Cl ions per unit cell are 18×8=1 and total number of Cs+ ions per unit cell are =1, so total number of CsCl in a unit cell is 1 or Zeff=1
So, density is given as,
ρ=Zeff×Ma3×1030×NA
or a3=Zeff×Mρ×1030×NA
a3=1×(133+35.5)4.37×1030×6.02×1023

a=(64.00)13×102
a=400 pm

Interionic distance =3a2
=1.7322×400
=346.4 pm
