$C u$ exhibits two types of valencies ${C u}^{+}$ and ${C u}^{+ +}$ . When chlorine reacts with copper why only $C u {C l}_{2}$ ( ${C u}^{+ +}$ ) is formed?

$C u C l$ is not formed because $C u^{+}$ is an oxidizing agent which oxidizes $C l^{-}$ to $C l_{2}$ and itself discards the molecule.
$C u C l$ can never exists. So, chlorine reacts with copper to form $C u C l_{2}$ only.
