Solution
When a substance is heated, the molecules gain energy and move more vigorously.
This causes them to move farther away from one another and the average distance between them increases. So, the substance takes up more space or expands.
This expansion of matter due to heating is called thermal expansion.
There can be three types of thermal expansion in the matter:
Linear expansion—an increase in the length of a substance on heating.
Superficial expansion—an increase in surface area of a substance on heating
Volume (or cubical) expansion—an increase in the volume of a substance on heating.
Hence, cubical expansion refers to an increase in volume.
