Cyanide ion is an ambidentate ion. i.e., it acts as CN- and NC-In aqueous solution CN- is a stronger nucleophile because here the carbon end leads to the formation of stable C-C bond, whereas the C-N bond is less stable.Another reason is CN- is a strong nucleophile and strong base becuase itsconjucate acid (HCN) is a weak acid.
