Question

Cyclohexanone forms cyanohydrin in good yield but 2,2,6-trimethytcyclohexanone does not. Explain why ?

Open in App
Solution

Cyclohexanes form cyanohydrins according to the following equation, as refer to the IMAGE 01.
In this case, the nucleophile CN can easily attack with out any steric hindrance. However, in case of 2,2,6trimethylcyclohexanone, metyl groups at α position offer steric hindrance, as a result CN group cannot attack effectively.
As refer to IMAGE 02. For this reason, it does not form a cyanohydrin.
