Question

D Three atoms A, B, C crystallise in a cubic solid lattice where A atoms are present in body centres B atoms are present at the edge centres as well as the corners of the cube and C is present in at the face centres of the cube. Now if the atoms are removed from the two 4 fold axis and one 2 fold axis passing through the cube then the formula of the compound is

Solution

If A atoms are at the corners, B atoms at the cubic center and C atoms at the faces of the cube then the formula of the compound can be derived as follows:
Atom A is shared by 8 corners
Atom B is present at the centre
1 atom of C is shared by 4 unit cells
Effective number of atoms of A per unit cell = 8 * 1/8 = 1
Effective number of atoms of B per unit cell = 1
Effective number of atoms of C per unit cell = 12/4 = 3
Hence formula of the compound is ABC
