Question

Dams are made thicker at the bottom than at the top. Why?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Dams are made thicker at the bottom than at the top because thicker bottom supports increased water pressure at the depth.
  2. The pressure in the liquid increases with depth. Thus, as depth increases, more and more pressure is exerted by water on the wall of a dam.
  3. A thicker wall is required to withstand a greater pressure.
  4. Therefore, the wall of the dam is made with the thickness increasing towards the base.
