Then $10 is 10·100=1000cents.

Step 2: Find the expression.

Number of pencils Dan bought is x.

Then, cost of x pencils is xycents.

So, Dan had 1000cents and he spend xycents.

Money left with Dan is given by 1000-xycents.

Hence, Dan is left with (1000-xy)cents.
