DDT:

  • DDT is also chemically known as Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, which is a colorless, tasteless, and odorless crystalline chemical compound.
  • It is generally hydrophobic and insoluble in water but has good solubility in organic solvents fats and oils.
  • It is mostly used as an insecticide against malaria.

Preparation of DDT:

  • We can chemically prepare DDT by using the Friedel–Crafts reactions between 1 mole of Chloral, also known as Trichloroacetaldehyde, and 2 moles of Chlorobenzene by using conc. Sulfuric acid as an acidic catalyst.
  • Here, Chlorobenzene reacts with Chloral in the presence of a Concentrated solution of Sulfuric acid to yield the product as p,p-Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane which is also known as DDT.
