Question

Decompose the vector b=6ˆi3ˆj6ˆk into two vectors, c and d, one of which is parallel and the other perpendicular to the vector c=ˆi+ˆj+ˆk.

Open in App
Solution

Given vector 6i3j6k=A

letA=c+d

where c is paralle to i+j+k and d is perpendicular to i+j+k hence c=m(i+j+k) 1 m-scalar

& d.(i+j+k)=0,d=a1^i+a2^f+a3^k

6i3j3k=(m+a1)^i+(m+a2)^j+(m+a3)^k

equating,m+a1=6

m+a2=3

m+a3=6

But a1+a2+a3=0

3m=3

m=1

then a1=7,a2=2,a3=5

6i3j6k=1(i+j+k)+(7i2j5k)
