Question

Deepak traveled from Delhi to Mumbai by car. The odometer of the car reads 12758km in Delhi and 14058km in Mumbai. On the next journey, Deepak traveled between the same two places by airplane. Let us suppose that the airplane travels by the shortest path with are 800km. Find the distance and displacement covered by Deepak.

Solution

Step 1:Given data

  1. Odometer reading when he started the journey from Delhi = 12758 km
  2. Odometer reading when he reached Mumbai = 14058
  3. The shortest distance between Mumbai and Delhi traveled by air= at 800km

Step 2: Calculation

Distance :

Distance is defined as the complete length of the path between any two-point.

So,

Distance = Odometer reading at Mumbai- Odometer reading at Delhi

= 14058 km - 12758 km

= 1300 km

Hence,

The total distance traveled by Deepak from Delhi to Mumbai is 1300km.

Displacement:

Displacement is defined as the shortest distance traveled between the initial point and the final point.

Here, the initial point is Delhi, and the final point is Mumbai.

The shortest distance traveled by Deepak by airplane is 800 km.

Displacement = 800 km.

Hence,

The total distance of the journey is 1300km and the displacement is 800km.
