Question

Define a chemical equation. Illustrate the main information by giving a balanced equation. Test whether the following equation is balanced or not? If not, balanced it by hit and trial method.

CH4(g)+O2(g)CO2(g)+H2O(l)+Heat

Is the above reaction exothermic or endothermic?

Solution

Chemical equation:
A chemical equation is the representation of a chemical reaction with the reactant and the products separated by an arrow. The reactants are placed on the left side and the products on the right side of the arrow. The number of atoms on the reactant and the product side is balanced to obtain a balanced chemical equation.

Example:

A balanced chemical equation is given below.

N2(g)+3H2(g)2NH3(g)(Nitrogen)(Hydrogen)(Ammonia)

In the above balanced chemical equation, the main pieces of information are:

1. The physical state of each substance, that is, gas is represented using the letter g in brackets.

2. The different elements and their count.

3. The value of coefficients used to balance the equation.

Given equation:

The given chemical reaction CH4(g)+O2(g)CO2(g)+H2O(l)+Heat is not balanced.

The hit and trial method help to balance a chemical equation by placing coefficients in front of a specific reactant or product to get an equal count of atoms on both sides of a reaction.

To balance the reaction, balance the number of Oxygen atoms by putting 2 before Oxygen on the reactant side and putting 2 before Water in the product side. Hence, the reaction is balanced. It is given below.

CH4(g)+2O2(g)CO2(g)+2H2O(l)+Heat

The reactions in which heat is liberated are known as exothermic reactions and those reactions in which heat absorption occurs are called endothermic reactions. The given reaction is exothermic because heat is represented on the product side of the balanced chemical equation.
