Solution

Colloidal solution:

  1. A colloid is a type of mixture in which the size of solute particles is intermediate to that of true solution and suspension.
  2. A colloidal solution has two phases: dispersed phase (like solute) and dispersion medium (like solvent).
  3. The dispersed phase is the compound which is present in small proportion and consists of particles of colloidal dimensions (10-9mto10-7m.)
  4. A dispersion medium is a component which is present in excess and acts as a medium in which colloidal particles are dispersed.

Aerosol:

An aerosol is a colloidal solution in which the dispersion medium is gas while the dispersed phase can be solid or liquid.

Example:

Mist - In mist the dispersed phase is liquid and the dispersion medium is gas.

Smoke - In smoke the dispersed phase is solid and the dispersion medium is gas.
