Allotropy:

  • The ability of an element to exist in more than one physical form having the same physical state is called allotropy.
  • The various existing forms of an element bonded to each other in a different manner, exhibiting identical chemical properties but different physical properties are called allotropic forms.
  • For example; Diamond and Graphite are the allotropic forms of carbon.
  • Few other elements which exhibit allotropy are Tin(Sn), Oxygen, Sulphur(S), and Phosphorous(P).
  • The allotropes of Sulphur are; Rhombic sulphur, Monoclinic sulphur etc.
