Apartheid was a policy of racial segregation under which whites and blacks were treated seprately in South Africa. Under this policy, blacks were discriminated against and treated as second class citizens. Under the practice of apartheid, blacks were prohibited from residing in white neighbourhoods, using public facilities reserved from whites or attending schools reserved for whites.
