Question

Define aprotic solvents.

Open in App
Solution

  • Aprotic solvents are those which can not donate proton H+ in the solution. In these solvents, the Hydrogen atom is not bonded with any electronegative atom like Fluorine (F), Nitrogen (N) and Oxygen (O) and therefore, the release of H+ ions in the solution is not possible.
  • Example of aprotic solvents are Carbon disulfide CS2, Benzene C6H6 and Carbon tetrachloride CCl4.
