Atomicity- The number of atoms present in the molecule of an element is called its atomicity. Based on atomicity the elements are classified into 3 types-

  • Monoatomic element -The element each of whose molecules contain only one atom.

Example - Cu, Ag

  • Diatomic element -The element each of whose molecules contain two atoms.

Example - H2, O2

  • Polyatomic element -The element each of whose molecules contain more than two atoms

Example- O3, S8
